Study Shows Irish Homophobia

The largest study on Ireland's LGBT mental health was published a few days ago and revealed some disturbing numbers.
  • Almost 20%  have attempted suicide (most of them saw this related to their sexual identity)
  • Almost one third had self-harmed at least once
  • 80% had been verbally abused
  • 58% had been bullied at school
  • 40% had been threatened with physical violence
  • 25% had been punched, kicked or beaten
  • More than half had been called abusive names related to their sexual orientation by fellow students
  • 40% had been threatened by fellow students
  • 20% have skipped school because they were afraid of getting hurt
  • 34% reported homophobic comments from teachers or staff
  • Of those who have ever worked, 15% have been verbally threatened by colleagues

Wow... big numbers I must say. And that's in Ireland, a supposedly tolerant republic. Lucky for me I've never felt threatened at school, maybe in elementary school I was verbally abused for not being good at sports, but that's it. Still I'm pretty sure most of the mexican LGBT people hasn't been that lucky.

The study was carried out by the Children’s Research Centre in Trinity College and
the School of Education at UCD.

Despite all that homophobia, Irish still like to wear kilts

  1. I doubt Ireland is a tolerant country. They are a heavily religious country with a tendency to violence. Haven't they been in war amongst themselves for like forever?
It's really no surprise they are homophobic.

  2. Yes, Ireland is a pretty religious and likes to preserve traditions (kilts, do I need to say more?), but they do have made some progress in gay rights (more than many other countries) some info can be found here

Maybe tolerant is not the best word to describe Ireland, but they seem to be on their way, that's why the results of the study surprised me.
